Hampi's boulder hills turn orange at dawn and dusk, and every evening crowds gather at a few favourite points. Here is how they compare, from easiest to hardest.
Best sunset points in Hampi
Hemakuta Hill — the classic sunset point
A 10–15 minute walk up from the Virupaksha Temple, with early temples on top and the Virupaksha gopuram below. Easy for families and the most popular spot, so arrive 45 minutes early.
Malyavanta Hill — drive to the top
Near Kamalapur, home to the Raghunatha Temple. You can drive almost to the top, so it suits elders, and it is quieter than Hemakuta.
Anjanadri Hill — sunset over the river
About 575 steps above Anegundi, with views over paddy fields, boulders and the Tungabhadra. See the Anjanadri Hill guide.
Sanapur Lake
A calm lake ringed by boulders on the Anegundi side — no climb at all.
Best sunrise point: Matanga Hill
Matanga Hill is the highest point in central Hampi and gives a 360° view over the Achyutaraya and Virupaksha temples and the river. The climb takes 20–30 minutes and is steep in parts. Go in a group, start in the dark with a torch, and avoid it after rain when the rock is slippery.
Our drivers can drop you at the foot of Matanga before dawn and pick you up for breakfast — book a Hampi sightseeing cab for the day.
