Yes, you can visit Hampi in the monsoon. Hampi lies in a dry part of Karnataka, so the rain is usually moderate — passing showers rather than days of downpour. The boulder landscape turns green, the Tungabhadra runs full, and crowds and hotel prices drop.
What Hampi is like from June to September
- June — the first rains cool the heat of May; still warm and humid.
- July — the greenest month; light rain on most days, few tourists.
- August — the Tungabhadra Dam usually fills and its crest gates are opened, a spectacular sight from the dam viewpoint.
- September — rain eases; a good, quiet shoulder month before the October rush.
What changes in the monsoon
- River crossings and coracle rides stop when the Tungabhadra is high, so reach Anegundi and Anjanadri Hill by road instead — a cab handles the longer route.
- Hill climbs (Matanga, Anjanadri) are slippery after rain; climb only in dry spells.
- Low-lying monuments such as the Underground Shiva Temple may be flooded.
- Everything else — the temples, Royal Enclosure, Lotus Mahal and Vittala Temple — stays open.
Monsoon travel tips
- Pack a light rain jacket and sandals with grip.
- Plan sightseeing by cab rather than bicycle or scooter.
- Keep afternoons flexible; showers usually pass within an hour.
- Ghat roads from Goa can be slow in heavy rain — start early. See Goa to Hampi cab.
